For the remaining twenty-six years of her life, my mother and I lived in a sort of uneasy truce. We had to avoid talking about religion—which was difficult, considering her faith and her church were the very focus of her life. To my everlasting regret, my mother died with sorrow and anger, believing that because of my “hardness of heart” she would never be able to see her only child and grandchildren in heaven. Each of us loved the other so much, but we were formal and uneasy together because of the religious gulf between us.
